“All Ducked Up” White Duck Watercolor Painting

Share

The challenges of the Duck Watercolor tutorial for me was trying to paint something to appear white without using white paint, and forgetting to trace the outline lightly.

The Subscription Box

Each month a box arrives from Let’s Make Art with the supplies to complete 4 projects. I think the boxes are adorable and after removing the contents, I store past watercolor paintings, paints and other supplies in them.

This is April’s subscription box. It contains 4 different projects:

  • Carrots
  • Cowboy Boots
  • Speckled Eggs
  • and Duck.

It also came with the 5 liquid watercolor paints that will be needed for all 4 kits. This month’s special item was a micron archival black pen. It wasn’t used in the Duck watercolor tutorial but I used it to sharpen the ducks eye and the hole on his bill.

Duck Watercolor Tutorial

The Duck project supplies:

  • 2 pieces of watercolor paper
  • Step by step written instructions
  • Carbon paper
  • Completed project photo
  • Outline for tracing

When using carbon paper, (sometimes called tracing paper) remember to lay the shiny side down over the watercolor paper and then trace over the ducks outline. Download the duck outline from Let’s Make Art for FREE here. Try to use light pressure while tracing. I forgot to do so and it was noticeable on this white duck’s chest and wing. Oh well. That’s why I named it All Ducked Up, lol. ?

I always plan to take pictures of the process while I’m painting but it never happens! Once I start painting I forget everything else, even the hot cup of coffee I always have when I first begin will turn cold.

I wish I had erased some of the outline I had traced on his chest and wing. I kept fiddling with it, eventually making it worse I think. But that’s ok, it’s just paper. Hopefully I’ll remember to trace very lightly next time I attempt a white subject.

My favorite parts are the neck and head which was surprisingly the easiest. No fiddling! lol. I used the black micron pen that came in the kit to sharpen up his eye and beak.

He looks a little mad. But since every duck I’ve ever ran across had an attitude, I like that.

Using the same paints supplied in the April subscription box, I’ve also painted the Carrots project. You can see it here: Colorful Carrots Watercolor.
