Purple Sky Watercolor Painting
After completing my last watercolor, I wanted to try something relaxing. So I tried Let’s Make Art’s Purple Sky tutorial. Although my sky turned out to be more blue than purple, I liked the blue tones I was getting so I decided to go with that. I also added a layer of stars between the background sky and the foreground trees. Painting a circle of trees was definitely relaxing.
The Subscription Box
The monthly subscription box arrives from Let’s Make Art with all the supplies needed to complete 4 projects. Each box comes with a surprise item with the regular supplies. This month it was a Fan 4 brush. I used it to paint the branches in my Purple Night Sky watercolor and to splatter stars.
Purple Night Sky Watercolor Tutorial
The Purple Night Sky project supplies:
- 2 pieces of watercolor paper
- Step by step written instructions
- Completed project photo
You can see the Let’s Make Art- Purple Night Sky tutorial I followed on YouTube here.
It was completed in 6 steps:
- taping border
- purple wash
- star splatters
- tree trunks
- branches
- removing tape
Using 3 paint brushes:
- Princeton Heritage size 2
- Princeton Heritage size 4
- Fan 4 Brush
And 4 paint colors:
- Magenta
- Berry Blue
- Dandelion Yellow
- Deep Blue
- Bleed proof white was used to splatter stars
The tutorial I followed did not add the stars to their sky. After the wash layer had completely dried, I created stars by splattering some bleed-proof white using the new Fan 4 brush that came in the box, and waited for it to dry completely before moving on with step 4.
I used these same paint colors creating my Pink Peony watercolor.
Unfortunately the paint did bleed under the tape a little where the paper had been more saturated with water. I can try to cover it with bleed-proof white, but at the moment I’m ok with it just the way it is. Here’s a photo of the painting after cropping.
