Colorful Carrots Watercolor Painting

The Carrots Watercolor tutorial I followed used the wet on wet technique and outlining with a micron pen. The carrots are painted freehanded.

The Subscription Box

This is one of the 4 watercolor tutorials that came in April’s monthly subscription box from Let’s Make Art.

The 4 kits included with the April subscription box.

This month’s subscription box came with these 5 liquid watercolors: Fuchsia, Deep Yellow, Tahoe Blue, Amethyst and Burnt Orange. And this month’s surprise item was a black archival micron pen.

Each individual kit includes step by step written instructions and a sample photo to follow. However I enjoy following along with Sarah on her video tutorials. I will first watch the video completely, (usually with my morning coffee) and then watch it again while I paint.

Painting the Project

This was so much fun to paint! The idea is to let the paint from each carrot blend with the carrot next to it. You also want to try to paint quickly so the watercolors stay wet and spread more. Leaving it alone and allowing it to do it’s thing is something I struggle with, but I’m becoming better at with the more I paint.

I used Princeton Heritage 4050 Series watercolor brushes size 2 and size 6 and I used all 5 colors that came with this month’s kit. I actually had 2 bottles from previous kits of the same colors that I decided to use up first.

This was my first time using a micron pen on a watercolor and I just love the effect it had.
