Dandelion Watercolor Painting Using Negative Space

Share

In watercolors, creating with negative space means painting around your subject to create it’s form instead of painting the subject itself. In this Let’s Make Art tutorial, I created the abstract shapes of dandelions and then used bleedproof white to add in the flying seeds.

The Subscription Box

The monthly subscription box arrives from Let’s Make Art with all the supplies needed to complete 4 projects. Each box comes with a surprise item with the regular supplies. This month it was a container of bleed-proof white. I used it to paint the flying seeds in my Dandelion Watercolor.

Dandelion Negative Space Watercolor Tutorial

The Dandelion Negative Space project came with these supplies:

  • 2 pieces of watercolor paper
  • step by step written instructions
  • completed project photo
  • paints

You can see the Let’s Make Art- Dandelion Negative Space tutorial I followed on YouTube here.

It was completed in 6 steps:

  • sketch design
  • paint around flowers
  • dandelion center and colors
  • flying seeds
  • black stems and leaves
  • details

Using 2 paint brushes:

  • Princeton Heritage size 2
  • Princeton Heritage size 4

The tutorial used Sea Blue and Lemon Yellow but since I still had paint on my tray from the Purple Sky Watercolor Painting, I used the following:

  • Berry Blue
  • Dandelion Yellow
  • Deep Blue
  • Bleed proof white

I created the green and black by mixing the blues and yellow together.
