Learning Negative Space Painting with Watercolors

Share
Watercolor painting using negative space.

In watercolors, painting negative space means to paint everything around your subject to create it’s form instead of painting the subject. The white pedals of the flowers are unpainted areas of the white paper. The green and purple areas around it create the shape of the pedals.

This is my attempt at following this tutorial. I enjoyed painting it but I wasn’t happy with the purple line I created. I later learned to not create vertical lines if possible. I don’t know if I will re-try this tutorial but I’ll continue to practice negative space painting.

Here’s the Let’s Make Art with Sarah Cray video I followed. I also have a link to their website in the sidebar and I’m signed up for their monthly subscription boxes.
